Week Eight: Overall Reflection
During my seven weeks in Mrs Cs' classroom it has been such a memorable experience. I will never forget my time there. I have acquired so much experience and knowledge from doing this part of the course. It just furthers my desire of wanting to become a teacher and to be that person that the students can look up to.
The weekly topics were really good because it really helped make the whole experience more enlightening. Thinking back on the experience I had and trying to connect it to these major discussion points to further my understanding was great. Even being able to apply what I have learned so far in my first year of university to the classroom was cool. The part I am going to miss the most is seeing all the students again. During my time there, even though it was rather small when compared to the actual teacher I created relationships with the students. They all interacted with me in there own way. Some were more comfortable with me than others. During the last day I found out that this one student who I was growing rather fond of, Mother worked at the school. I went to the staff room and sat down. Most of the teachers knew who I was at this point. Because there were three male teachers in the whole school that I observed anyways. When I walked into the room this woman was sitting down and I never saw her before. But she approached me right away and said "so you are the teacher that my son loves". In a non intimidating way. I was really pleased that a student was telling his parents about me. Realizing that I am making impressions on the students only being there partially made me think of the potential I would have as a full time teacher. I was pretty sad that the field experience is over. During the my last day while all the students' were lining up to get ready to leave, one by one students were approaching giving me big hugs saying thanks and good bye. I did not think I was going to get any hugs from the students. When the first student came up to me to hug me my hands were in the pockets of pants and I almost lost my balance and just about fell over! This experience only reinforces my goal of becoming a teacher. I need to learn more about preparing for my days and deciding what stuff in the curriculum to use when I become a teacher. Some other questions I have are: How do deal with special needs students appropriately. 3 professional goals that I am setting for myself during the next leg of my journey is to get more experience with kids. There are plenty of times I could volunteer I just need to take advantage of those moments. Secondly I need to work on my presenting skills since that is such a huge part of being a teacher. My final goal is to work on being more organized. If I want to become a teacher I seriously need to work on that, because it is my biggest flaw. If you aren't organized as a teacher it can have negative consequences for you but more importantly it will have negative consequences for your students. |
